Medical Interpreter Qualification Training
October 12-13, 2009
$200

Participants will gain extensive knowledge of the National Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice and acquire hands-on interpretation skills and practice.

Participants passing this course will be able to interpret using:

  • Accuracy
  • Confidentiality
  • Objectivity
  • Professionalism
  • Appropriate Medical Terminology

Participants will be tested on ethics and medical interpretation skills in the foreign language.  There is an additional testing fee for those participants who wish to be evaluated in more than one language.

Successful candidates will receive a certificate as a qualified medical interpreter.  All participants will receive a certificate of completion for this medical interpretation course.

Children and Youth in Foster Care: Striving for Best Treatment Outcomes

Warm Springs Training Institute is pleased to offer a Professional Development Seminar that addresses this important topic. This training outlines issues and discusses tactics that will produce positive outcomes for children and youth in foster care. Ken Perry, LCSW, an expert in providing clinical services within the foster care system, and Janet Fletcher, LSW, (both of Idaho Department of
Health & Welfare, Region 4) will share insights from within the system that can lead to teamwork that furthers your clients’ improvement. You are invited to join us for training that will enhance your effectiveness in working with this population.

Those who complete this training will gain a clearer understanding about:

  • Treatment issues for children in the foster care system from legal, best practice, and teamwork perspectives
  • Working with foster parents, birth parents, and extended family to achieve the best results for foster children in their care
  • The role of the child welfare case manager
  • The systemic constraints present when children/youth are in the foster care system

CAMP DARFUR
October 14-16, 2009

Boise State’s student club, Human Equality Rights Organization will be hosting Camp Darfur October 14 – 16 in the Quad from 9 am to 3 pm.
Camp Darfur is an interactive awareness and educational event that brings attention to the ongoing genocide in Darfur, Sudan, and gives individuals the opportunity to discover their own power to make a difference.  The genocide in Darfur has taken thousands of lives and displaced millions. The international community has failed to protect a population and Camp Darfur gives people the opportunity to send a message of peace to the people of Darfur. It’s time to stand up and create action, NOW!
This event is free and open to the public. Donations for the organization will be accepted.

Dr. Ashis Brahma

Boise State student organization Human Equality Rights Organization (HERO) will be hosting Dr. Ashis Brahma to speak in the SPEC Center on October 15 at 7 pm. The event is free and open to the public. Donations for the organization will be accepted. Dr. Ashis Brahma was the sole doctor to more than 20,000 Sudanese Refugees as a result of the Darfur conflict in Sudan. “Working in Chad with the Sudanese refugees from Darfur has deeply touched me. After working for a year from June 2006-July 2007 I came back to Chad only to be chased away by the rebels invading N’Djamena.” Brahma has made many presentations in the US, including several radio, television and newspaper interviews. His audiences have included United Nations Association, ICRC, STAND, middle schools, high schools, universities, church groups and Save Darfur groups. Dr. Brahma visited BSU earlier this spring.

This second training in the Parenting Series will introduce participants to many of the unique challenges faced by parents with limited English proficiency. Recent research, looking at the different rates of acculturation for children, youth and parents as well as the potential positive and negative consequences of language brokering by youth, will be reviewed. Resources to assist parents will be discussed including interpreters, school programs, etc.

PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT -
Reading Together: A storytime for New Americans and English Language Learners

(Boise, ID - 8/27/09)  New Americans and English Language Learners can learn English through a new special storytime presented by Boise Public Library at the Library! at Hillcrest branch.  The storytimes will be offered on Saturdays at 2:30 p.m. from September 19-October 24.

During the stortyime participants will enjoy: reading picture books, counting, learning new words, singing and dancing to music, and learning with toys. All programs will be in simple English. The storytimes are for preschool age children for whom English is a second language and their parents or caregivers. The storytimes will be designed specifically to meet the needs of this growing population and will provide participants with opportunities to begin to develop and improve English language skills.
